Denote is a Foreplay alternative worth evaluating when your main task is finding ad references, organizing them and researching competitor creatives. If your priority is reporting on your own ad-account results, include that requirement explicitly: Foreplay offers Lens creative analytics, and a competitor research signal is not a substitute for your campaign data.
Choose the tool around a task your team repeats. A useful evaluation ends with an organized reference and a brief someone can act on, rather than a longer feature checklist.
Updated October 30, 2026: rewritten around current product sources, a task-based comparison and a practical evaluation workflow.
TL;DR
- Evaluate Denote for discovery through Top Ads, ad-library research and organized references.
- Foreplay's current product suite includes Swipe File, Discovery, Spyder, Briefs and Lens; describing it as only a swipe file misses relevant capabilities.
- Separate competitor research from analytics on accounts you own. They answer different questions.
- Compare plan access, team needs and your actual workflow before choosing. This review does not establish a universal cheapest or best option.
- Test the workflow with the same reference set and a real brief; verify advanced outputs in the account and plan you intend to use.
What has changed in the comparison?
Foreplay's official product overview describes ad saving and organization, Discovery search, Spyder competitor research, Briefs, and Lens reporting. Its Lens documentation includes performance reports, comparison reports and creative tests.
Those are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent assessment of accuracy or results. They do establish why a fair comparison needs to distinguish research, production planning and own-account analytics.
On Denote, the interface inspected on October 30 exposed Game and Tool Top Ads categories and Trending, Rising and New views. The workspace navigation also identified Facebook Ad Spy and saved-ad folders/boards. Use those actual entry points when evaluating the product; broader marketing language alone does not establish an available category, network-specific module or completed AI output.
The observations in this guide cover visible controls and selected creative details. They are not a full migration test, a save/export reliability benchmark or a verification of campaign-performance attribution in Denote.
Foreplay vs Denote: compare the job you need done
This table maps evaluation routes, not verified feature parity. In particular, the presence of an AI Analyze control does not prove that every creative has a completed, useful analysis. Open a relevant result and check its content before counting it as part of your workflow.
When Denote belongs on your shortlist
You need a defined starting point for discovery
Use Denote Top Ads when the first question is which creatives deserve a closer look. Choose a relevant category and completed week, then open individual ads. Keep the selected view and filters beside your notes.
A chart can help locate a reference. It cannot reveal an advertiser's profit, conversion rate or customer quality. Treat popularity and estimated exposure as research context, not proof that copying the ad will produce the same result.
For example, a tool-app research session can start with a recognizable task: how do other apps introduce their camera action or learning outcome? Our app advertising examples show three actual posters and the limits of what those stills establish.
You already know the competitor you want to inspect
Begin with the advertiser's identity and the source ads. In Denote Ad Spy, evaluate the Facebook research workflow available to your plan. Confirm that the selected brand and relevant creatives match the company and market you intended to research.
Record what the ad actually shows before inferring an angle or a testing strategy. Several similar creatives may suggest a question worth investigating, but they do not expose the advertiser's experiment design or the result of a controlled test.
Your bottleneck is turning references into a usable decision
The value of a saved reference is the context attached to it. A teammate should be able to answer: what did we notice, why might it matter, what can our product truthfully demonstrate, and what should we test?
Keep the reference link, observation date, format and copy language with the brief. For a format question, use our static vs video comparison; for the experiment itself, use the ad testing framework.
When Foreplay's capabilities deserve particular attention
If your existing team relies on connected ad-account reporting, review Lens before switching. Its official product page describes creative reporting, comparison and analysis using your performance context. Confirm supported accounts, metrics and reporting requirements against your own setup.
If a team already has a substantial saved library or a repeatable brief process, evaluate migration and collaboration as separate tasks. Verify export contents, media availability, board structure and the permissions your reviewers need. This article does not claim a one-click transfer between the tools.
Avoid choosing a replacement solely because both tools display a creative thumbnail. A saved reference, an advertiser research view and an account-performance report may look similar while carrying different evidence and access requirements.
How to compare pricing without a misleading headline
Use the current Denote pricing and Foreplay pricing pages with the same billing cadence and team requirements. Plans and allowances can change.
At the October 30 source check, Foreplay's pricing distinguished Basic for inspiration organization from Workflow, which added competitor and own-ad analytics capabilities. Its monthly and annual options differed, so an annual monthly equivalent should not be presented as a monthly commitment. Check users and brand allowances alongside the headline amount.
The public pages checked on October 30 listed these prices. Treat this as a dated billing comparison, not proof of equivalent access or completed outputs:
Sources: Denote pricing and Foreplay pricing, checked October 30, 2026. Currency is USD. Annual equivalents require an annual commitment; confirm current checkout totals, taxes and added users. Denote Lite lists limited workspace access, while Pro lists broader Top Ads and library access. Foreplay Basic and Workflow cover different jobs, so a direct entry-price comparison alone cannot decide the fit.
For either tool, write down the exact actions your plan must support: historical discovery, filters, the number of advertisers, saving, exports, completed AI outputs, team review and own-account analytics. Then compare the applicable total cost. A lower entry tier is not a saving if it cannot complete your required task; a higher tier is unnecessary if its additional capabilities do not solve your bottleneck.
Evaluate the workflow with the same reference set
Use a small set of relevant ads you are permitted to access. Choose the same market, format and research question in each product. The following is a suggested evaluation procedure, not a timed benchmark we performed.
- Find the reference. Confirm the advertiser, source, language and destination. Record anything that is missing.
- Inspect the creative. Distinguish an image from a video poster. Watch the relevant sequence before making claims about pacing or audio.
- Organize it. Use the intended folder/board workflow and confirm where the reference is stored.
- Add the decision context. Write one visible observation, one interpretation and one proposed original test.
- Pass it to a teammate. Verify that their access lets them understand the source and the brief without reconstructing your research.
- Check required outputs. Open the actual export, report or AI analysis if that capability is part of your buying decision. An available button is not the completed result.
Score the workflow on relevance, clarity, retrieval and the effort needed to reach a decision. Avoid treating an ad's long observed duration as proof of high returns; that would distort the tool evaluation before you have tested anything yourself.
FAQ
Is Denote a direct replacement for every Foreplay capability?
This review does not establish that. Denote is a candidate for the reference-research workflow described here. Verify specific analytics integrations, exports, advanced outputs and team requirements before replacing a system your team depends on.
Does Foreplay offer performance analytics?
Yes. Its current Lens product and documentation describe creative analytics and reporting. Evaluate what it supports for your own accounts rather than relying on older comparisons that characterize Foreplay as only an inspiration tool.
Can either tool reveal a competitor's true ROAS?
A public ad reference or third-party estimate does not establish a competitor's true return. Keep observable creative details separate from advertiser-owned conversion and revenue data.
Choose the tool that completes your research task
Start with the recurring job: finding references, researching a named advertiser, organizing evidence, briefing production or analyzing your own results. Then evaluate the exact workflow and plan that supports it.
To explore Denote for reference research, open Denote Ad Library and take one relevant creative through the observation-to-brief process above.
