TikTok ad spy research helps you find relevant advertising ideas, inspect the creative and landing-page promise, and decide what to test for your own audience. Start with a source that covers your market, narrow the comparison set, and keep the evidence beside each idea.
A useful TikTok ad spy tool should help you answer three questions: Where did this ad come from? What can I observe? What decision can my team make from it? A large result count alone answers none of them.
TL;DR
- Use TikTok Creative Center for filtered creative inspiration; it is a curated source, so a missing competitor does not establish that the brand is inactive.
- Use an ad library to search for relevant references and retain their source context.
- For Game or Tool research, Denote Top Ads adds a weekly discovery route. Keep its popularity signals separate from TikTok's own metrics.
- Shortlist ads by relevance and a testable idea. Views, rank, and observed run length cannot establish competitor profitability.
Method note: This guide describes a research process. The example brief is fictional; it is not a report of ranked ads or an evaluation of paid-tool coverage.
Choose a TikTok ad spy source for your question
Different sources solve different research problems. Choose the question before choosing the tool.

Illustration: each discovery session should retain its source context and finish with a testable idea.
TikTok says the ads featured in its Creative Center Top Ads collection are authorized by advertisers. That inclusion rule matters: the collection is useful for studying creative approaches, but it is not a complete competitor campaign inventory. TikTok's About Top Ads documentation
Denote's Facebook Ad Spy is a separate route for Facebook competitor research. For TikTok, begin with Creative Center or a relevant TikTok result in Denote Ad Library. Do not assume that every product called “Ad Spy” covers every platform.
How to evaluate a TikTok ad spy tool
Before committing to a tool, try a small research task you already understand: one category, one market, and a few advertisers whose identities you can verify.
Do not award a tool a “winning ads” label because it sorts by run length. An observed long run is a reason to investigate, not proof that the advertiser acquired profitable customers. Likewise, an unavailable result can reflect coverage or access limits.
Build a narrow TikTok ad spy comparison set
Write a research question such as: Which product-demonstration openings make the benefit understandable before a spoken explanation?
Choose one market, product category and campaign objective. Avoid comparing a purchase-focused product video with an unrelated app-install creative simply because both have many views. If the source does not expose your preferred filter, record the limitation and manually exclude irrelevant references.
In TikTok Creative Center, search for a product or keyword and use the relevant region, industry, objective and time filters. TikTok's desktop documentation describes additional language/format options and an analytics view with relative performance over the video. Read the displayed measure before interpreting a peak. Keep TikTok's native analytics in one column and third-party observations in another. A TikTok view-rate metric and a Denote weekly popularity score cannot be compared as if they were the same outcome.

Use Denote Top Ads for Game and Tool discovery
If your research concerns a game or tool app, open Top Ads and choose the relevant category. Select a completed week and the chart that fits your question:
- Weekly Trending: inspect creatives prominent in the weekly popularity chart.
- Weekly Rising: inspect creatives showing increasing weekly popularity.
- New Creatives: inspect ideas newly observed in the chart.

Keep the channel scope relevant to TikTok; a mixed-network result is not automatically a TikTok example. Record the selected chart and available filters. Advanced access may require signing in or a suitable plan.
This is a discovery step. It does not turn a chart score into TikTok CTR, installs, spend, or ROAS. For a broader discovery routine, use our guide to finding ads worth testing.
Turn TikTok ad spy observations into one test
Inspect each candidate in three passes: watch the opening without sound, watch the full video with sound, then check the destination if it is accessible. Write what you saw before writing why you think it might work.
Illustrative example: A fictional desk-organizer ad opens with a cluttered surface, shows one storage action, and finishes with a tidier desk. Its destination explains the organizer's dimensions.
The research gives you a reason to run the test. It does not give you the result. Use the ad creative analysis worksheet to make the handoff more detailed.
Keep a research log that survives the brainstorm
For every retained reference, record source link, advertiser, platform, market, capture date, chart/filter scope if relevant, opening, promise, proof, CTA, unknowns and proposed test. Add the actual creative identifier when available; otherwise retain the source URL and note the identity limitation.
At the next review, ask whether the hypothesis became a produced creative, whether it ran, and what your own results showed. Archive ideas that no longer fit the product or audience. This keeps TikTok ad spy research connected to production decisions.
TikTok ad spy questions
Can a TikTok ad spy tool show a competitor's ROAS?
Public creative observations do not reveal a competitor's private revenue and acquisition costs. Treat any estimate according to its provider's definition, and evaluate your own creative with your own results.
Does saving a reference mean I can reuse its footage?
Keep the reference for analysis and make an original execution using assets and claims you can use. A saved file does not establish permission to republish it.
What should I do first?
Choose one research question and a small, comparable set of ads. Begin in Denote Ad Library, or use Top Ads for a Game or Tool question. End the TikTok ad spy session with one clear test brief, its source, and its unresolved assumptions.
